The Mayor’s order will keep the community safe in the wake of the civil unrest that erupted yesterday evening, May 30, in the City, and across the nation. This followed a day of peaceful and lawful demonstrations in San Francisco, protesting George Floyd’s tragic death in Minneapolis last week. Public safety reports show there were a significant number of people engaged in criminal behavior, including violence, vandalism, looting of businesses, arson, and failure to follow lawful dispersal orders. These conditions make the unrestricted presence of persons on City streets and sidewalks after 8:00 p.m. dangerous to both them and the public’s safety. This curfew effective tonight from 8pm until tomorrow 5am is necessary to protect our residents during the time of day when public safety is threatened. Exemptions to the curfew include: Peace officers, firefighters, other City and County employees engaged in authorized emergency operations, members of the National Guard, or any other responding personnel deployed to the City and County; Individuals who can establish to the satisfaction of a peace officer that they are in such place for the sole purpose of traveling to a home or workplace or to obtain medical assistance; Authorized representatives of any news service, newspaper, radio or television station or network, or other media organization; People experiencing homelessness.
